Georgia Department of Human Services, Division of Family and Children Services
The Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) is the part of the Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) that manages the state's foster care and adoption programs. For those children who cannot remain with their parents due to child abuse and neglect, DFCS works to locate family members who can provide a safe and loving environment for the child until the risk is resolved and the child can, hopefully, return to their parents. When suitable family members are not available, DFCS finds caring foster homes where children can stay temporarily. For those children who cannot be reunited with the parents, DFCS is charged with finding a permanent home for them through adoption, guardianship or legal custody with a caring and responsible adult.
DFCS also helps low income, out-of-work parents get back on their feet and aids with childcare costs for low income parents who are working or in job training. The Division administers the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the food stamp program, and determines eligibility for Medicaid. Additionally, the agency funds many supportive services provided by community-based organizations for vulnerable children and families throughout the state of Georgia.
